Qualification requirements for maritime pilots

In order to render pilotage services of maritime pilotage in: Gdańsk, Gdynia, Świnoujście, Szczecin and on the roadstead of those ports as well as on the seaway Świnoujście-Szczecin, it is required to possess a diploma of maritime pilot together with a certificate of pilot competence. Those requirements are regulated by the provisions of the decree below.

§ 6. 1. In order to obtain a diploma of maritime pilot entitling to rendering pilotage services of maritime pilots in: Gdańsk, Gdynia, Świnoujście, Szczecin and on the roadstead of those ports as well as on the seaway Świnoujście-Szczecin, it is required to possess:

1) diploma of master mariner;

2) 12-months experience as a master on seagoing commercial vessels of 3.000 GT or more in international shipping;

3) practice in piloting vessels executed as a candidate for maritime pilots;

4) certificate of vessels manoeuvring course on manoeuvring simulator;

5) certificate of exam qualification.

2. Practice that is referred to in section 1 point 3 is participation in at least 150 pilotage services of maritime pilotage rendered by pilots indicated by the chief pilot of the appropriate pilot area in which the candidate is serving his practice. The practice should last at least 6 months and may not be performed earlier than in the year before issuance of the diploma of maritime pilot.

§ 11. In order to obtain a certificate of pilot competence in for the areas indicated in § 3 subsection 2. 2, it is required:

1) to possess a diploma of maritime pilot for vessels of overall length up to 130 m;

2) to render pilotage services for at least 12 months and piloting in that time at least 100 vessels of overall length up to 130 m - for seagoing vessels of overall length up to 170 m;

3) to render pilotage services for at least 24 months and piloting in that time at least 50 vessels of overall length more than 130 m up to 170 m - for seagoing vessels of overall length up to 200 m;

4) to render pilotage services for at least 36 months and piloting in that time at least 15 vessels of overall length more than 170 m up to 200 m and possessing a certificate of manoeuvring of large-vessels course on seagoing reduced models - for seagoing vessels of overall length more than 200 m.
